Campfire Chat: Rainy Reads, Firepit Feasts & Eco-Friendly Paws

Welcome to Campfire Chat—a cozy corner where I share what’s on my mind, what’s growing in my backyard, and maybe even inspire a new habit or book recommendation. Here’s what’s been brewing in the tent lately.

🎧 On in the Background

Rain, rain, and more rain. While the endless drizzle can dampen outdoor plans, there’s a silver lining: the soothing soundtrack it provides. Whether I’m working, reading, or drifting off to sleep, the steady patter of rain has been a calming companion. (But, I admit, I am ready for some sunshine.) At least I can put the rainwater to good use. And you can, too. Here's how.

📖 On My Nightstand

I’ve been immersed in Emily Henry’s latest novel, Great Big Beautiful Life. It’s a captivating tale where two writers, Alice Scott and Hayden Anderson, vie to pen the biography of the elusive heiress Margaret Ives. Set on picturesque Little Crescent Island in Georgia, the story intertwines mystery, romance, and the complexities of storytelling. I’ve read every Emily Henry novel and love that her characters are often writers. While her novels are probably best described as chick-lit, her writing is truly outstanding and always a great read.

📍 Pinned to the Map

Speaking of books, my husband and I are gearing up for a Book Warehouse event later this month. It’s become a cherished tradition for us—browsing through aisles of discounted books, discovering new authors, and reigniting our passion for reading. While we primarily use e-readers for their convenience and eco-friendliness, there’s something irreplaceable about the tactile experience of flipping through physical pages.

A shoutout to local libraries embracing the digital age! Services like Libby offer free e-books, making reading more accessible and sustainable. If you haven’t explored your library’s digital offerings, now’s a great time to dive in—find that perfect beach read!

🌿 On My Mind

Why do simple conservation habits sometimes feel so challenging? Remembering to bring reusable totes, declining plastic straws, or turning off the tap while brushing—these small actions can slip through the cracks. I delved into this conundrum, exploring the psychological and societal factors at play. Read more here.

🥾 On the Ground

Mother’s Day brought a delightful twist to our usual celebrations. With the rain pouring outside, we decided to utilize our lanai’s fire pit for a cozy (dry) BBQ. It was heartwarming to have my husband join us under the shelter, grilling and sharing stories without the usual separation of indoor and outdoor spaces. The food was delicious, and the memories even more so.

🫖 Steeping

Recently, I’ve been contemplating the environmental impact of owning a pet. With two dogs and two cats, our household’s “carbon pawprint” is significant. I’ve come across plant-based dog foods—though I’m curious about their nutritional adequacy. There’s also flushable cat litter, but concerns about potential parasites funneling into the water system give me pause. On the bright side, compostable poop bags have been a seamless switch for us. I’m eager to hear from others: How have you made your pet care routines more eco-friendly? Share your insights, and stay tuned—August will be dedicated to our furry friends!

🏕 Basecamp

In the realm of daily rituals, I’ve found unexpected tranquility in rolling our freshly laundered flannel un-paper towels onto a cardboard tube. This simple act has become a meditative practice, grounding me in the present and reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
