Out and About with Scout: Outside Inn Campground
Scout finds farm animals, five-star campground bathrooms, cinnamon rolls, and a donkey who (maybe) also follows SEC football.
👃 Scout’s First Sniff
I would like the record to show that I visited Outside Inn Campground during the kind of South Carolina heat that makes everyone question why humans invented clothing.
It. Was. Hot.
And humid.
And we still had a blast.
Outside Inn is a family-run campground and working farm in Santee, South Carolina, spread across more than 60 acres of pasture, pines, trails, and animal-filled goodness. There are full-hookup RV sites, tent camping and glamping options. (Apparently they welcome campers much larger and considerably less charming than I am.)
The whole place manages to hit a very specific camping sweet spot: enough amenities to make life easy, but still enough farm-and-woods personality that you know you actually left home.
Also, I met a donkey. A really sweet donkey.
🛞 Know Before You Roll
Prepare for Lowcountry weather
.If you're coming in summer, bring shade, water, fans, and whatever else prevents your humans from melting directly into their camp chairs. Cooler-season Scout would like to return and investigate this place further.
The bathrooms deserve their own review.
My humans have camped in a lot of places, and Kayt declared these the cleanest and nicest campground bathrooms she has ever seen. Not “pretty good for a campground.” Genuinely nice. The bathhouse is air-conditioned and includes private bathrooms, showers, and on-site laundry. (Anyone who says campground bathrooms don't factor heavily into a return visit has either never camped or owns an RV with a bathroom larger than I am.)
Yes, there's Wi-Fi.
Complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi is available across the property, along with strong cell service. Usually I advocate disconnecting, but college football requires technology, and we happened to be camping the weekend of the U of SC Gamecocks' first game of the season—and my people are big fans.
Go meet the neighbors.
And by neighbors, I mean a Highland cow, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and one particularly excellent Jerusalem donkey named Ollie. Farm feedings are currently held twice daily for overnight guests, so check the campground's current schedule before your stay.
📍 Pull Over for This
The farm. Outside Inn doesn't feel like somebody stuck a petting zoo next to an RV park as an afterthought. It's a working farm, and interacting with the animals is part of staying here. The campground currently has more than 25 named farm animals representing eight species, plus a flock of 40-plus chickens. (I’m still working on names for all of them.)
My humans loved wandering over to visit everyone, which is how we met Ollie the donkey.
And Ollie and I became sports fans together.
The barn became Gamecock headquarters for the first University of South Carolina football game of the season. My humans watched the game, I supervised, and Ollie hung around nearby.
I cannot confirm Ollie's official SEC allegiance. I can confirm he is excellent company.
🥚 Scout’s Snack Report
Campers can get fresh eggs from the farm—which is already a ridiculously delightful camping perk—and there were also homemade cinnamon rolls available for purchase.
GET. THE. CINNAMON. ROLLS.
This is not the place to suddenly become disciplined about breakfast.
The self-serve farmstand also normally carries things like firewood, drinks, ice cream, s'mores supplies, and local goods, although offerings can change.

Forget perfectly staged campsite photos for a minute.
Photograph the little moments here.
A goat walking over to investigate you. Chickens bustling around the farm. A Highland cow at dusk. Your kid—or fully grown adult human—getting ridiculously happy because a donkey decided to stand beside them.
And if the weather cooperates, stay outside after dark. Outside Inn specifically highlights its dark skies, and having open farm country around you gives you a pretty good excuse to put the phone down and look up.
🪝 Hitches & Glitches
Our biggest glitch was Mother Nature apparently setting South Carolina to broil.
That meant we didn't explore all of the campground's wooded walking trails nearly as much as we would have in saner temperatures. Which is less of a complaint and more of a reason to go back.
Outside Inn is also an actual farm, so expect actual farm things: animals, dirt, fences, bugs, and the occasional smell reminding you exactly where those fresh eggs came from.
Personally? I consider that a feature.
👍 Another Roll Around?
Absolutely.
Outside Inn is the rare campground my humans left already talking about visiting again.
Friendly people. Great facilities. Animals. Trails. A relaxed atmosphere. Bathrooms so clean they became a topic of conversation. And Ollie.
This one could very easily become an annual Scout stop.
🥾 Leave No Trace, But Grab a Souvenir
Remember that the animals here aren't props. Follow campground guidance about interacting with them, supervise kids, keep pets leashed and away from livestock areas, and don't feed anybody unless you've been told it's okay.
Then support the people taking care of all of it.
Grab something from the farmstand. Buy the cinnamon rolls. Take home local goods. And if someone offers you farm-fresh eggs for breakfast, understand that grocery-store eggs are going to seem deeply disappointing for a while afterward.
